Signs you need it
- Water bubbling out of the top of the downpipe in heavy rain
- A full gutter that overflows only at the outlet end
- A gurgling or knocking sound from the pipe
- The gully at the bottom staying dry while the gutter fills
A clean gutter does no good if the downpipe is blocked. The usual culprit is the swan neck, the S-shaped bend at the top where the pipe steps back to the wall. Leaves, moss and the odd tennis ball collect in the bend, the water backs up, and the gutter overflows at the outlet end even though the rest of the run is clear.
We rod the pipe from both ends, take the swan neck off if it needs it, and flush water through until it runs clear into the gully. Then we lift the gully grid and clear that too, because a silted gully sends the water straight back up the pipe.
Nests and squirrels
Spring blockages are often nests. Jackdaws in particular drop sticks down a downpipe until one wedges and the rest pile up on it. We will not disturb an active nest, by law and by choice. If we find one, we photograph it, tell you, and come back after the young have left at no extra call-out charge.
